The Mission of Outreach and Evangelism is: To reach out to our community with the love and saving message of Jesus Christ by involving the congregation in acts of service that show God’s love and concern in practical ways. I don’t know what image comes to mind for you when you think of evangelism. It might be the image of someone going door-to-door, sharing the Gospel with total strangers. I think most of us would rather have a teeth drilled rather than face the prospect of going door-to-door sharing the Gospel. Truth be told, I’d be the first in the dentist chair with my mouth wide open! Now let me tell you what I am excited about: Not doing door-to-door evangelism, but engaged in acts of service. Just as Jesus came to serve rather than be served (Mk 10:45), we want to be servants in our community. We want to be “out there,” among the people, sharing the love of Christ as we meet their felt needs. What will this service look like? It will take many forms. The common thread is that our acts of service break down the barriers between the churched and unchurched, providing an opportunity for the love of Christ to shine through. We envision that the “outreach mindset” will become so engrained in our church culture that outreach is on-going and routine -- it literally becomes part of our DNA. |
